Duct Tape Dress & Accessories
My duct tape prom dress design was the start for my realizing how much I enjoyed fashion design. It was my first project for me to understand the work and process in design and what it takes to make a design sketch become a reality. At that stage, I had not had any training or classes in fashion or design.
My dress and its accessories, as well as my prom date’s tuxedo and accessories, were featured on CNN and the local Macon, GA., television stations and in print media. For this Stuck at Prom duct tape scholarship competition, I decided to create a mermaid style sweet heart neckline prom dress inspired by a combination of Disney princesses, especially Ariel and Cinderella.
In total, it took me 400 hours to complete this prom dress, using over 100 rolls of duct tape. As I am big on details, I have over 400 handmade duct tape embellishments on the dress, accessories and tuxedo. I created these outfits entirely out of duct tape, including the dangling earrings, a clutch, a hair piece, a flower wrist corsage and even my fingernails. For my date, I also made duct tape shoes and a bow tie to go with his tuxedo. This projects demonstrates my attention to detail, creative problem solving, persistence, patience, determination and ability to be a self-starter while completing a project with a deadline.
