The CFDA / Teen Vogue, in Partnership with TARGET

Target is known for their limited edition, guest designer collaborations which are often collectable, and always exclusive. In 2002, Isaac Mizrahi created a capsule collection for Target which skyrocketed to every fashion editor's most-wanted list. Since then, CFDA designers including Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Phillip Lim, and Prabal Gurung have teamed up with Target to create accessible, directional fashion in their "must have" collections.

In 2016, I was challenged to create a unique Target guest designer collection filled with original ideas and a fresh vision, aimed specifically at the Target customer. I developed a capsule collection of 12 looks inspired by the artist, Frida Kahlo with hand-drawn technical flats. When developing the collection, I begin by carefully considering all aspects of the Target customer including tastes, likes (loves), style and budget. In this collection, I made design choices that are relevant to Target's price-point, and realistic to the "when and where" of wear. As I designed, I created a world for my customer to identify with and live in.

INSPIRATION

In my S/S 2017 collection I explore the feel of modern day stylish/chic Frida Kahlo. I was inspired by her going to her garden to pick beautiful flowers to make into hair pieces – a recurring theme in many of her self-portraits.

My goal for this affordable guest collection with Target is to share her uniqueness, creativity, joy and appreciation of Mexican culture. My approach is to make colors and patterns a vast influence. I feel that Frida Kahlo’s life, paintings, Mexican culture and inspiration will appeal to a wide range of women across a full spectrum of age, race and socio-economic status.
